Where IOP Sits Between Outpatient and Residential Care
Addiction treatment runs across a continuum, from round-the-clock supervision down to a single weekly check-in. Detox and residential or inpatient care sit at the most intensive end, for people who need full-time monitoring. Partial hospitalization asks for a full day of programming most days of the week. Standard outpatient care sits at the other end, often just one or two sessions a week. IOP falls in between. That’s exactly where our IOP addiction treatment in Mount Pleasant, WI fits, with more clinical contact than a single weekly session.
SAMHSA’s Treatment Improvement Protocol on intensive outpatient treatment describes it as a structured, multifaceted approach delivered while someone continues living at home. That’s a useful way to think about it. You’re not checking into anything.
Is Our Addiction IOP Right for You?
People enter our IOP program from many different starting points. Maybe you’re a professional who can’t take weeks away from work. Maybe you’re a parent or caregiver holding a household together while quietly managing something most people around you don’t know about.
Privacy might matter to you too, since you may want care that stays out of view. And often, what’s really going on is substance use and a mental health concern showing up together.

What Happens in Your Addiction IOP Sessions
At Axis Behavioral Health, every IOP plan looks different, because every person comes in carrying a different history. Your assessment shapes which pieces get used. Individual sessions work through what’s specific to you. Group therapy brings the perspective that only comes from people further along in the same process. Family sessions come in when the people around you are part of the recovery picture too.
Underneath all of it is CBT and DBT, run through a trauma-informed lens, aimed at building the coping skills and relapse-prevention habits that hold up once the structured part of treatment ends.
You can attend in person at our Mt Pleasant location or join sessions virtually depending on what fits your schedule and your comfort level. Some weeks that might mean coming in. Other weeks it might mean logging in from home between work and picking up your kids. Either way, it’s the same clinical program, the same care team.
Many of our staff bring lived recovery experience alongside their clinical training, adding insight from having faced comparable difficulties themselves. Sitting across from someone who gets it changes the conversation.
Medication Support Within Your IOP Plan
We may include psychiatric medication management in your plan when it’s clinically indicated, particularly when we’re treating substance use and a mental health condition together. A licensed clinician works with you individually on any medication decisions, as part of your broader treatment plan.

From First Call to Your First Session
At Axis Behavioral Health, your first conversation with us is a low-pressure chance to talk through what’s going on and find out whether IOP is the right starting point. If you’re in crisis, we connect you to support immediately, no matter when you reach out. That first contact can happen by phone, email, or in person, whatever’s easiest for you.
From there, a licensed clinician walks you through a full assessment, covering your mental health, medical history, and what you hope IOP will do for you. What comes out of that conversation becomes your IOP treatment plan: which therapies you’ll use, whether medication management makes sense, and how much your family gets involved, if at all.
Once that’s settled, you meet the care team running your IOP program, start programming, and settle into a rhythm of periodic check-ins that keep adjusting the plan as your life does.
Most major PPO insurance plans cover IOP treatment with us. Self-pay is available if that works better for you. We evaluate financial assistance case by case. Our team verifies your specific coverage before you commit to anything.
